Summative Assessment
At intervals throughout each Design Tech unit, students complete mid-summative assessments (done individually) on which the marking period grade is based. Mid-summative assessments measure mastery of course objectives and are graded on a criterion scale of 0-8. Click on the link below for a sample grading criteria. Students may re-do mid-summative assessments as needed, usually within one week. Mid-summative assessment grades left unimproved convert to summative at the end of each marking period.
There are a total of 4 mid-summative assessments that occur in a single unit (Criterion A - D), yielding a total maximum score of 32. At the conclusion of each marking period, a student's total score (out of a possible 32) is converted to a report card grade for achievement. Because the scoring is criterion based and measures mastery of course objectives, conversion is not based on a ratio.
Mid-Summative Assessments for each section of a unit:
Inquiring and Analyzing - Criteria A (graded 0-8): Students explain and justify the need for a solution, conduct research, analyze related solutions that inspire a novel solution to the problem and develop a design brief which presents analysis of their research.
Developing Ideas - Criteria B (graded 0-8): Students develop design specifications, present a range of feasible designs, present a rationale for their design choice and produce design sketches and drawings.
Creating the Solution - Criteria C (graded 0-8): Students write a plan outlining the methods and other resources needed to build their product, demonstrate technical skill when making the product, follow their plan and explain changes to the chosen design and plan when making the product/solution
Evaluating - Criterion D (graded 0-8): Students describe testing methods to measure success of their product/solution, explain the success of the product/solution, explain how the product could be improved and describe the impact of the solution on the client/target audience.
